There is an
engrossing story behind why Bakri Eid is celebrated. The story states the
significance of Bakr Eid. Once upon a time, Allah challenged Prophet Ibrahim to
prove his faith in God. Allah asked him to sacrifice his dearest and nearest
one. To comply with Allah’s order or challenge, he decided to sacrifice his son
Ismail as he loved him most like other fathers in the world. His love towards
his son was as strong as his belief in God. Since, no father can see his son
dying in front of him, Ibrahim’s heart went numb, and hence he put Ismail on
the altar at the mount of Mina near Mecca to slay. He closed his eyes and
slaughtered his son with a sharp sword. He divided his son’s head from the body
reciting Allah’s name. Much to his surprise, he found his son alive in front of
his eyes. Allah replaced his son with a ram, which was lying in the pool of
blood with its head apart. This is how Ibrahim proves his faith in Allah.

Eid al-Adha, Eid
ul-Zuha or Bakr Eid is ardently celebrated by the worldwide Muslim community.
The festival has a great religious significance. Bakr Eid signifies the end of
the pilgrimage, Hajj to Mecca. The festival involves Qurbani (animal
sacrifice). Muslim families slaughter goats, sheep or other Qurbani animals on
the holy occasion of Bakr Eid to symbolize Ibrahim’s sacrifice to Allah. According
to Koran (the holy epic of Muslims), when Ibrahim was about to kill his son
Ibrahim, Allah stopped Ibrahim and replaced his son with a lamb to be sacrificed
instead. So, Muslims sacrifice animals on Bakr Eid to honor the willingness of
Ibrahim. After sacrifice, the meat is divided into three parts; the one third
is distributed among friends, neighbors and relatives; another third is given
to the poor; and the remaining third is retained by the family.

and Time of Bakra Eid 2016-17 in India
According to
Islamic calendar, Eid al-Adha always falls on the same day (the 10 th day of
Dhu al-Hijjah) every year, and lasts for four days. If the Gregorian calendar
is to be followed, the festival date may slightly vary from year to year, approximately
drifting 11 days earlier every year. Also, there are astronomical calculations
that affirm the date of Eid al-Adha. As per the astronomical calculations, Bakr
Eid falls when the moon is sighted. This causes the date to slightly vary from
country to country. Once the moon is sighted in a particular country, the
festival is celebrated the very next day. As per the Islamic calendar,
Gregorian calendar and astronomical calculations, Eid al-Adha 2016-17 is
falling on either 11 or 12 September.
